Calling Directors for the 2009 Season
VALE LUCKY
Phoenix is very sad to report that our patron and friend Lucky Grills has passed away peacefully in his sleep. Lucky was a true supporter of Phoenix, regularly attending our shows and inspiring us all with his energy and commitment to the performing arts.
Our very sincere condolences go to his wife Maria and family.
"You will be missed but not forgotten Lucky"
Mr Lucky Grills O.A.M
Being a kid of the depression, Lucky can recall money being pretty scarce when he was growing up. "We didn't have a lot of money…mum taught us that you only got out of life what you put into it," said Lucky.
Back then, children were expected to entertain themselves, which is how Lucky learnt to play the clown. Lucky's sister even won a prize for her singing, which was presented to her by Dame Nellie Melba.
After the family left Hobart, they moved to a farm near Burnie, where to this day, Lucky still has relatives.
On his last visit to Tasmania in the mid 1990's Lucky visited the old farm. "It was wonderful to go back and find all that nostalgia was still there," he said, somewhat surprised the building was in a similar condition to how it was when he lived there.
Although many people know Lucky from his starring role in the TV series 'Bluey,' most younger people know him through the D-generation's version of the same programme, but overdubbed with new voices and re-titled 'Bargearse'.
Lucky got a good laugh out of 'Bargearse' and only recently was told the video was one of the biggest selling items in the history of the ABC Shop.
Reflecting on his life, Lucky Grills says, "It's been the best life I could possibly ever want for…I was granted the order of Australia two years ago… I've been respected by everybody…I don't think you could ask for much more than that".

Maria Grills
Maria trained in drama at the Brisbane Arts Theatre and Twelfth Night Theatre and consequently worked professionally in England and the U.S. during the 60's and 70's.
After arriving home, she worked in the entertainment agency business, particularly in the Cabaret/Club industry, which was thriving then. That was where she met her late husband Lucky, with whom she spent the last 12 to 13 years working beside, both on and off stage.
Since he has gone, she has continued her life long interest in community theatre, and actively been involved with the Gold Coast Little Theatre's production of "Annie Get Your Gun" as Director's Assistant/Assistant Stage Manager.
Maria looks forward with great anticipation the forthcoming productions of "Phoenix" and maybe to being involved here too.
